Dialect

A dialect is a form of a language spoken in a particular region or by a particular group of people that differs in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar from other forms within the same language.

Dialects within the same language are closely related and can be usually understood by other speakers in the same dialect continuum. There are thousands of dialects around the world, which enhances linguistic variety and richness.

Although regional varieties or regiolects are the most common form of dialect, dialects can also appear within:

  • Social classes (sociolects).
  • Ehtnic groups (ethniolects).

Both standardized and non-standardized variations of a language can be considered dialects, with the only difference being institutional recognition by governments and education centers.
